Rising Rock

During my senior year of college, I was a member of Rising Rock — UTC’s student-led multimedia outlet. Although I participated for just one semester, the experience had a lasting impact on me. My first multimedia piece told the story of my grandparents’ journey to America. I wrote the article, produced an audio segment, created a video, and took portraits of my grandparents.

As a first-generation child, I often felt the need to hide my heritage in order to fit in with my American peers. Working on this project not only gave me a deeper understanding of my family’s past, but it also helped me reconnect with and appreciate my cultural roots.

The piece was featured on Chattanooga’s local NPR station, WUTC, in The Chattanooga Times Free Press, and in UTC’s alumni magazine.
